What to Expect
Understanding Our Classes
Each class type is designed for a specific goal. Here's a quick guide so you know exactly what to expect when you walk through the door.
Adults BJJ (Gi)
Our flagship adult program. Train with the traditional Gi kimono, developing technique, leverage, and strategy. Suitable for all levels — beginners and experienced grapplers are welcomed and catered for in every session.
Adults BJJ (No-Gi)
Shorts and rash guard only. No-Gi sessions focus on wrestling-based takedowns, scrambles, and submission wrestling. Faster-paced than Gi training and excellent cross-training for any combat sport athlete.
Junior BJJ (Gi)
Technical Gi-based classes for school-age kids and teens. Structured sessions covering fundamentals, escapes, and positional control. Builds discipline, focus, and respect alongside solid BJJ skills.
Junior BJJ (No-Gi)
Fast-paced grappling for juniors without the kimono. Develops wrestling, scrambling, and submission skills in a dynamic, engaging format. Great for young athletes with an eye on competition.
Pee Wee Kids Class
Our junior entry-level program for young children. Classes focus on movement, listening, coordination, and basic self-defence in a fun, safe environment with our award-winning kids coaching team.
Kids Boxing
Structured boxing fundamentals for kids in a safe, technique-focused environment. Develops coordination, footwork, defence, and striking skills. A great complement to BJJ for young athletes.
Open Mat
Unstructured training time where members choose their own partners and drilling. No instruction — just rolling. Open Mat is included in all memberships and is an excellent supplement to your regular class attendance.
Good to Know
Before You Come In
What to Wear
For your first class, wear comfortable workout clothing. We have loaner Gis available for adult beginners. For No-Gi, board shorts and a rash guard (or fitted t-shirt) work well.
Absolute Beginners
Zero experience needed. Our fundamentals classes and weekend sessions are specifically designed for people who have never trained before. Every black belt started as a white belt.
Parking
North Strathfield has 100+ free parking spaces in the Bakehouse Quarter precinct. Easily accessible by public transport — a short walk from North Strathfield Station.
Booking
Regular members can simply show up to any class. For your first free trial, give us a call on 02 9764 5870 or send an email to confirm your spot — though walk-ins are welcome too.
Questions
About Classes & Times
Members can walk in to any class without booking. For your first free trial class, we recommend calling ahead on 02 9764 5870 or emailing contact@hrjj.com.au so we can ensure mat space and have a coach ready to welcome you properly. Walk-ins are still welcome.
The Saturday morning Adults BJJ (No-Gi) class at 10:00 AM is one of our most beginner-friendly sessions. The lunchtime No-Gi classes Monday, Wednesday and Friday are also great entry points. Bring yourself, wear comfortable clothing, and we'll handle the rest.
Most new children start in the Pee Wee Kids Class or Junior BJJ depending on their age. Our coaches will assess where your child will thrive best during the trial class. Kids with prior martial arts experience may go straight into the Junior classes — we'll advise on the day.
Our adult schedule remains consistent year-round. Kids and junior class schedules may be adjusted slightly during NSW school holidays. We always communicate changes via our social channels and direct to members. Follow us on Instagram or Facebook for schedule updates.
Open Mat is unstructured training time every Sunday from 8:00–11:00 AM where members roll (spar) with training partners of their choice, drill techniques, or work on specific areas. There is no formal instruction. Open Mat is included in all active memberships. Visiting practitioners from other academies are welcome — please reach out in advance to arrange a visit.
